Lightning Protection Testing
As recommended by both the current British Standard, BS EN 62305 and its predecessor, BS 665, the annual testing and inspection of lightning protection systems are essential for the continued safeguard of the building, the building structure itself, along with the contents and the lives of its occupants.
Any required maintenance is a vital part of ensuring the lightning protection system remains in a serviceable condition to preserve its longevity, efficiency and safety.
Our services cover:
- Lightning Protection is fundamentally installed to reduce the risk of “loss of human life” and “loss of service to the public” in accordance with BS EN 62305.
- Regular maintenance of the lightning protection system is often a requirement of the building insurances.
- The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 states that “all systems shall be maintained so as to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, danger”.
- The effectiveness of the lightning protection system may be reduced over time due to physical damage, corrosion, adverse weather conditions, or as a result of additions or alterations to the building under protection.
- Earth electrode resistance values can fluctuate adversely over time and are susceptible to changing weather conditions. It is therefore recommended that a test and inspection is carried out at 11‑month intervals to ensure all seasons are covered over time.
Lightning Protection Testing to BS 6651:1999
For lightning protection installed before August 2008, the system can be tested, inspected and maintained to the previous standard (BS 6651:1999 “Protection of Structures Against Lightning”).
Lightning Protection Testing to BS EN 62305:2012
For systems installed after August 2008, the system must be tested and inspected and maintained to the new standard (BS EN 62305:2012 Protection Against Lightning). BS EN 62305
